Game Codes
It’s Not Cheating... It’s Surviving

What are game codes?
Game codes are codes that modify standard settings on video games to achieve a different level or effect than what can be done by a player alone. They are, basically, cheat sheets for challenging games in which players require extra assistance.

Why do game codes exist?
Game codes exist purely for the reason of helping players get beyond a certain area or allowing players to do things in a game they wouldn’t normally be able to do, such as have unlimited lives, weaponry or advance to higher levels.

Who creates them?
They are generally produced by game manufacturers or programmers. Playstation and Xbox games come on CDs, and GameCube games come on smaller CDs. These are a far cry from the days of Nintendo and Atari – what used to come on a cartridge that was inevitably pitted against a wall in frustration now comes on disc, and with some whopping help. The CD games have codes built in by the creators to help the players win. It’s a fantastic marketing gimmick to keep players interested and able to complete games, encouraging them to keep playing new games.

Why do players use game codes?
How do you keep going when you’re stuck? People give up on their video games very easily these days. If you hit a brick wall and fight it for twenty minutes and still can’t advance, the average gamer will move on. They will take out the game and pop a new one in, because they get frustrated. That’s why codes are there, such as one code that’s on most games: the level jump code – to immediately bypass your current situation, showing as if you already performed the necessary tasks to advance you to the next level. It’s just about the most common code out there, and it invariably makes players very happy.

How do you get these game codes?
Most codes are announced before the release of the games. Some of the games are so complex, the manufacturers put out how-to booklets to get players through the game. The thing about these booklets, amazingly enough, is that without them, you can’t beat the game. Some books and magazines available simply have hints and secret passages made by game designers. Fortunately for the technologically advanced, there are more than enough websites the player may turn to for codes. Lucky you, here are a few!
