Dont's like your family?
Adopt A New One

By Kim Worsley
CN Staff Writer

Holidays can be stressful, and try even the best of us. If you’ve ever taken a Myers-Briggs personality test, you’re aware that under stress, the less dominant qualities of your personality can come to the forefront. One who is not usually aggressive may act out in aggression when under stress! Reflect for a moment on your family members’ personality traits. When you think about last year’s holidays, do you recall uncomfortable small talk turned to family bickering? I’ve definitely felt more “picked apart” than the turkey carcass after some holiday gatherings. For many bi-coastal families in the twenty-first century, the possibility of sharing family holidays is not an option. It’s more and more common to live apart from immediate family. Some will view that as a burden and some a blessing! Then, how can we achieve that “warm, fuzzy” holiday feeling while apart from (or avoiding) our own clan? Do we achieve it simply by hanging out with family…or by creating that magic within ourselves?

Adopt a family – literally!
This one is for the very serious “family building” phase of your life. I adopted my foster child, and the holidays have never been merrier! You can adopt as many warm cuddly babies or kids as you can effectively love and provide for. They come in “swaddling” or the convenient Dont's like your family?

Adopt a family – literally!
This one is for the very serious “family building” phase of your life. I adopted my foster child, and the holidays have never been merrier! You can adopt as many warm cuddly babies or kids as you can effectively love and provide for. They come in “swaddling” or the convenient “already potty trained” sizes. There is no greater gift than giving to a child who has already had a rough start in life.

Take in a foster child!
If you have the time, love and patience, but aren’t sure that you want to make a permanent commitment…this is a great way to go. In California alone, there are thousands of foster and foster-adopt children waiting for homes each day. Older children have an especially tough time finding placement in a caring home.

Find a family to sponsor!
Families in crisis can be found through various area shelters and food banks. You can provide holiday meals, gifts, clothing, bedding, school supplies. The sky’s the limit. There is also the possibility you can invite one of these families into your home for the day. If you’re interested in learning about ways to volunteer your time in the Sacramento area, a great website to visit for more information is www.handsonsacto.org!

Serve the homeless.
Meals are served on different days at different venues. It’s guaranteed to give a glowing sense of fulfillment.

Find “furry” friends.
Some folks are more comfortable nurturing a pet than spending time in the company of strangers. Rescue an animal from the shelter or spend the day helping to care for them.

Round up “transplants.”
Find those who live far from their family or don’t have families and invite them in. Ask your neighbors if they have plans. Create your own clan!

And finally, be content.
Let yourself enjoy the intimacy of the day, whether you’re alone, with your children, spouse, new or furry friends.

May your days be merry and bright!PS
